Q: I have read that Johnny uses a Gibson Firebird with with 2 single-coil pickups and that for acoutic work he uses National resonators, style 1 tricone and some version of the single resonator type. Has the Firebird been modified from stock, and if so how? Any special pickups or setup? I also read that he use a heavy socket wrench extension as a slide. In some pictures he is using a thumb pick and I read that he also uses a single finger pick? What type is it? On the index finger? What amps and settings does Johnny like? What types and gauges of strings? I'm really looking forward to Johnny's guitar tab book and hope it has an introductory section that answers my quests and has lots of slide riffs.

Thanks for the great web site.
Bill Cooper
A: The firebird is stock has not been modified nor has the national. The lazer has both DiMarzio and Seymour Duncan pickups. The mayor key when it comes to sound is to tune down a whole step. When it comes to the slide, if you are referring to a pinky size pice of plumbers tube - yes... The amps are music man 100 watts 410's. For strings I use D'dario 10s.

Q: Hi mr Winter, wished you were playing in the Netherlands so I could visit one of your shows this weekend. What kind of tuning do you use, playing slide? I saw a picture on the net with you playing a Flying V: looked real good!! Beter than the other pieces of wood J And I love that huge Ibanez(?) on the cover of :Hey whereÕs your brother?. Keep up the good works and greetings from the Netherlands.
A: I use open E tuning.

Q: Johnny:
I roadied concerts for Beach Club Promotions for you and your Brother. I have listened to you since about 69. Even my Dad who was an Officer in Army appreciated your music. I went to Edgar's 50th birthday party in Houston, where I live. Do you stay in contact with Rick Derringer and do you ever plan to do another CD strictly with slide and the blues. I am sorry I missed your recent show at Rockefeller's. Hope you come back to Houston soon.
Tom Parker
A: I don't stay in touch with Rick Derringer and I really hope to make another CD with lots of slide and all blues.

Q: I was wondering why Johnny wasn't in the blues bros. movie... I wondered if he was ever asked to participate and if not... What does he think the reasoning was for not being asked? He would have been so perfect making a cameo in it.
Ellen Chiarella
A: i was never asked!

Q: Hi Johnny, I'm a huge fan and your talent is amazing. I love the three studio albums from the 90's and the last live record. Also, I enjoy hearing your voice on the last record plain without the bluesy howls, you really have a superb natural voice, much as we liked the old one!

My question is: has your hearing suffered from the very high volumes of 30+ years stage and studio playing? Have you ever worn ear plugs? Do you have ringing in the ears? People like Pete Townshend have complained for many years about hearing issues. Surely your shows were as loud as The Who's!
Sincerely, Gary in Toronto.
A: My hearing has suffered a little but I have no ringing in my ears. I never used airplugs.

Q: > Hello! My name is Thomas and I am of course a great fan of J.W. I have a few questions that I hope you can answer. 1: What amplifier and effects did and do J.W. use? 2: Did he play the doublnecked Gibson on Bonie Maronie on "Saints & Sinners"? 3: Did he use a "flanger" on Bonie Maronie on the Live album? 4: What year are the Firebirds? 5:What tune do he play slide in? 6: Glass or metalslide? Thank you!
Regard Thomas MŒrtensson PS! Looking forward to the new CD!
A: I use Music Man 410s 100 watts and a Boss CE2 chorus pedal. I use the Firebird for slide in open E. The guitar is early to mid 60's. My slide is a pice of pipe

Q: Dear Johnny:
I seem to just barely remember you appearing on the old Mike Douglas afternoon talk show long ago. When explaining your music you reached out and grabbed and startled fellow guest, actor Lee Marvin. This did occur, right??
Jeff R. Barwick
A: That's right!

Q: Johnny:
I saw you play recently at Juanita's in Little Rock. You were great; I have been a fan for years when I first heard you on Still Alive and Well. My question is did you ever get a chance to play with Jimi Hendrix? How did you find him and is there a recording if you did play together? Thanks for playing such beautiful guitar. See you next time you come to Little Rock.
Rob
A: Yes, i played with Jimi a few times.
