Q: People seem to be having trouble finding JW CD's. I have managed to find them all (the official ones). I ordered almost all of mine from the US via the internet. The best site is: www.cdeurope.com This is a US based site that imports CD's from Europe (funnily enough I can't find them here)! Search on Winter, Johnny and you will find lots of hits 160+. Most of the CD's are on multiple labels, and if out of stock, try again on another label. It worked for me. Just for the record, the one I had most difficulty obtaining was Progressive Blues Experiment. I ordered this one 5 times before I got it.
A: Thanks for at least trying to find my records.
Q: Hey Johnny, I've been going to your concerts since 74.' When are you coming back to Houston? I haven't seen you in a while.
A: I should be back around March or April of the new year.
Q: I have you on video tape from the David Letterman Show from app. 1981. Did you like that experience? You sure did a great job with Paul Schaffer's band and the drummer looked worn out trying to keep up with you. Your interview was pretty humorous as well. I Hope you come back to Dallas soon.
A: I hope to be in Dallas March or April of the new year.
Q: DEAR MR. WINTER, I AM A BLUES GUITARIST/SINGER,SONGWRITTER.IN THE ST.LOUIS AREA, AND HAVE BEEN A DEVOTED FOLLOWER AND SUPPORTER OF YOU AND YOUR MUSIC FOR OVER 25 YEARS. WHEN PEOPLE ASK ME ABOUT MY PLAYING AND MY INFLUENCES YOU ARE THE FIRST NAME ON THE LIST! THOUGH I HAD A VERY DEEP BLUES BACKGROUND IT WAS YOU WHO INSPIRED AN IN MY OWN DIRECTION. SO MANY DOORS WERE OPENED BY YOU FOR ME. I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU! IF YOU ARE EVER IN THE AREA PLEAS FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME I WOULD TO JUST SIT AND TALK WITH YOU THANKS AGAIN.
A: Thanks for thinking of me.
Q: Hi Johnny, This is the first time I am on your website and its great to see that you have so many loyal fans that love you and your music (myself included). Who are some of your favorite young blues artists today? Have you heard of Tommy Castro? I saw him at Manny's Car Wash this summer and he blew me away. If you get a chance check him out. If you want me to send you a copy of his CD, let me know. Take care of yourself and hope to see you soon.
A: I did a show with Tommy in Kansas City. He came on my bus and gave me his CD. Really good player.
Q: I have a Robert Johnson Collection that mentions that it's rumored that you learned to play slide by listening to these classic songs from this master. Is this true? Also what influence did Robert have on you and what other guitarists inspired you?
A: I would say mostly Robert Johnson.
Q: I WOULD LOVE TO GET MY HANDS ON LIVE VIDEO OF JOHNNY. I THINK IT WOULD BE A BIG SELLER FOR J.W.FANS. ANY PLANS FOR THIS?
A: Working on a new video. Hope to be ready early part of next year.
Q: I got a video from amazon.com Johnny Live in Toronto, 1983. It cost a WHOPPING $77 bucks but is well worth it. Johnny was in that band with Jon Paris, so it is a 3 piece. Great songs and performance, good sound.
A: Working on a new video. Hope to be ready early part of next year.
Q: I don't know if you've seen the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary Concert video, but Johnny is on it doing "Highway 61 Revisited." He is absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, he only does the one tune, but there are lots of other great performances on it. If you get a chance to see it, watch for the two things that really got me about JW's performance. Booker T and the MG's are the host band, featuring the legendary Steve Cropper on guitar. They are just mulling around when Johnny comes on stage. Cropper is looking off to the side when Johnny comes out, plugs in and does a little slide warm up. When Cropper hears this, his head literally snaps around to Johnny and he gets this huge smile of disbelief on his face. The other thing that got me was Johnny is being backed by one of the finest bands ever assembled and they're cookin.' After the first verse you see Johnny looking back at Jim Keltner on drums and giving the sign to pick it up. This is and the latest cut of Woodstock are about the only video performances that I've seen of Johnny. Woodstock features "Meantown Blues" the sound was terrible, but just to have footage of Johnny in his prime doing one of his very best songs is still special. Hey Johnny, would love to hear you do both of these tunes live again.
A: I will give it a lot of thought.
Q: It is a pleasure to have discovered this web site. I have been a fan since 1973s "Still Alive And Well" tour with Foghat!I now live in the Wash. DC. area. And have heard rumors that your management has had a "falling out" with the management of a local rock venue that you used to regularly play: Jaxx, in Springfield, VA. My question is: If you don't plan to play at Jaxx again, are there other cubs in the area that you might book, so that we in the DC area can see you again? A few years ago, I had the pleasure of seeing you perform at "The Birchmere," in Alexandria, VA. Any chance that you might play there again?
A: I will play Jaxx February 6th. My Management never had a problem with the club.
Q: I have a Sponsoring Agency in Germany/Nordrhein-Westfalen/Heiden with my Partner Mr. Christoph Freiherr von Lepel. Well, next year on August, 28 we have our first Blues-Rock Festival called Duewelsteennach. Now we are looking for a main act Group. Our concept will be a small, but very attractive Open Air Festival. We will have 3 regional Blues Groups performing and I think it would be fantastic to have Johnny as a main act for one hour playing here on the festival. The first time I saw Johnny in my Hometown Hamburg, I think in 1972 or Ç73 in the Hamburg-Harburg municipal Hall with Ike and Tina. After this Time Concerts in the Hamburg Stadtpark and Gro¤e Freiheit (Abbi Wallenstein!!!) The Promoter was, I think, the Agency of Mr. Carsten Jahnke, Hamburg. Well, today, Amy Heiden is a little nice town and 45 Minutes away from the airport Dusseldorf. Our Sponsoring Partners are Food-and Beer Companies. Well, if it is not possible for Johnny to play here, please send us Information about another Slideguitar and hard stomping Texas Blues-Rock Players-and Groups (with the addresses please). Then we try to get a Player or Group as the main act for our Festival here in Heiden; allright? Do you have an Agency in Germany where we could speak about our request?
A: Please fax Skyline Music (603-586-7086) ask for Bruce Haughton. I plan on Europe in July.
Q: Big John (JDW) Read on your Q & A that you may be coming to Nashville in Jan. Got any news on it yet or where it will be? Hope you'll be ready for some of those Steak and Biscuits!! They opened back up and they are great!!
A: Hey! Steak and Biscuits here I come!
Q: 25 years ago my brother introduced me to the music of Johnny Winter. When my daughter was 5 years old she fell in love with a song from 3rd Degree (one of my favorites) and would dance to it! Thanks for autographing that CD cover for me and most importantly, thanks for the many years of GREAT music! You turned me on to the world of blues. Thanks Johnny!
A: Thanks! Keep following me.
Q: Johnny, Just a word of THANKS for taking the time to answer your e-mail. This makes the forum all worth while. I look forward to periodical responses from yourself on fan mail. Keep up the good work and if possible...include Baltimore in your 1999 tour.
A: See you Feb 5th at Daytona's.
Q: Hi Johnny!! I was at a guitar show in Dallas in 1987 and Eric Johnson had a 1963 sunburst firebird in an anvil case with your name on it. Why did you give him your guitar? Is he a friend of yours? Do you have plans to record with him? Thank you Johnny for all you've done for Texas musicians.
A: I have no knowledge of giving Eric Johnson a Sunburst Firebird. No plans of recording with him.
Q: Will the real Eric Clapton please stand up... and hear this... you are good but Johnny is the best! I could listen to Johnny's CD's and LP's and not get tired of the music. I have 18 recordings from Johnny and only 2 from you. What does that tell you? Johnny deserves his recognition. So, give it to him.
A: Hey, thanks! I wish I had 10 million letters like this!
Q: In a recent news letter you mentioned you were reviewing songs for your new studio CD. On JDWIII you wrote a
GREAT song "Love Song To Me" & "Aint Nothing To Me" from Still Alive & Well. A country song on the new CD that has that classic country sound (like
the others do) to it just may get some airplay. I know I'd play it on my "A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock n Roll" radio show. I do the others.
Something to think about.
A: I will give it a lot of thought.
Q: I prefer pen and ink to communicate but I will give this new stuff a try. Can you tell me - if I ask a
question will Mr. Winter reply? Is any subject out of bounds? What does he like to talk or hear about with fans?
A: Any subject to me is OK.
Q: Hey Johnny, Please come and play in Phoenix it's been years. You've played in California recently but haven't
been in Arizona for years. Ever since I heard "Leland Mississippi Blues" I was hooked on the blues. Man, that was the most rebellious, emotional
sound I had ever heard. Johnny you are why I love the guitar. For years I thought playing a guitar was something I could never do. That was until I
realized that the music was in my soul and I just had to learn how to get it out. You handed me the key through your music, thirty years ago (almost)
and I am eternally grateful. If you do come to Arizona you are more than welcome to come and throw down a jam and enjoy some "Arizona" hospitality.
Thanks Again Johnny!
A: I hope to see you next year when I support my next new CD.
Q: Johnny, I've noticed that when you were using the Firebirds you often had a different one every couple years.
Were you not happy with some of these. If so, why?
A: I like the Gibson. It feels right.
